Romney $76 million, Obama $60 million.

Those were the May fundraising totals for the two men who will square off in the general election this fall. As the Associated Press explains, last month was the first time this campaign season that Mitt Romney has managed to out-raise the president.

Obama has a reputation as a powerhouse fundraiser, something that was on display last month when he managed to bring in $15 million at a single event at George Clooney’s house. With Hollywood's help, the president and the Democratic party managed a significant jump from April's $43.6 million total.

But even with a strong May for the president, Team Romney managed to win the donation battle last month, nearly doubling the $40 million it brought in the previous month.

After moslty failing to pull in small donors during the primary, Romney received more than 300,000 donations under $250 last month. His camp saw that as a sign that more voters are ready to invest in a different political future. "It is clear that people aren’t willing to buy into ‘hope and change’ again," Romney’s finance chairman said in a statement (via the Hill).
