Bill Clinton: Romney Presidency Would Be "Calamitous"

Nothing says "I'm sorry for saying that the man running against you has a 'sterling' business record despite your attacks against it" quite like $3.6 million in campaign donations and the promise of more.

That was the total that Bill Clinton helped raise for President Obama at a trio of private fundraising events in New York City on Monday night. Politico reports that throughout the evening, the former president never addressed last week's stray compliment about Mitt Romney's time at Bain Capital and instead focused on what a hypothetical Romney presidency would mean for the nation, something he said would be "calamitous for our country and the world."

Obama's own remarks, according to Politico, riffed off of his 2008 campaign theme: "I’m more determined than I’ve ever been to finish what we’ve started," the president said, adding, "I’m not a perfect man and haven’t been and won’t be a perfect president, nobody is. ... I still believe in you—I hope you still believe in me."

The Associated Press reports that Monday's trio of fundraiser—which took place in a private home, at the Waldorf Astoria hotel and at the New Amsterdam Theatre in Times Square—brought in at least $3.6 million for Obama's reelection campaign. Clinton and Obama are expected to continue their two-man fundraising show at a series of joint events across the country. That's despite their support of two opposing candidates in a bitter New Jersey primary battle for the House, which, as the Hill notes, is seen as a proxy outlet for some lingering rivalry between the two.
