Rick Santorum is endorsing Mitt Romney for president.

The news came in an email that the former Pennsylvania senator sent to his supporters Monday night, which was then quickly forwarded along to Politico.

Santorum had previously pledged to do all he could to help defeat President Obama in November's election, so the endorsement doesn't exactly come as a surprise. Still, it certainly won't hurt Romney with social conservatives, a group that has proved more than a little skeptical of him in the past.

"Above all else, we both agree that President Obama must be defeated," Santorum wrote. "The task will not be easy. It will require all hands on deck if our nominee is to be victorious. Governor Romney will be that nominee and he has my endorsement and support to win this the most critical election of our lifetime."

Politico has the full email here.
