UPDATE: Here's the new twist in the rape allegations against Greg Kelly, the co-host of a popular morning news program in New York City who is also the son of the NYPD commissioner: The woman who is accusing Kelly of rape claims that she got pregnant from the alleged attack.
The New York Daily News got the scoop. It comes from unnamed sources, so we of course urge caution, but the paper reports that the accuser has told police that she subsequently got an abortion after learning that she was pregnant after the incident.
The woman claims that she and Kelly spoke by phone and text at some point after the alleged incident, although it is not clear if those communications involved the alleged pregnancy.
Thursday, Jan. 26: Greg Kelly, the son of New York City's police commissioner, is under investigation for allegedly raping a woman in Lower Manhattan late last year.
The New York Times reports that detectives initially interviewed the accuser earlier this week and quickly turned over the NYPD investigation to the Manhattan district attorney's office because of the conflict presented by the department investigating its commissioner's son.
Kelly, a broadcast journalist who co-hosts a local morning news program in New York City, denied the accusation through his lawyers. "Mr. Kelly strenuously denies any wrongdoing of any kind, and is cooperating fully with the district attorney’s investigation," the statement read. "We know the district attorney’s investigation will prove Mr. Kelly’s innocence."
Kelly did not appear on the Thursday morning broadcast of his television show, Fox 5's Good Day New York. Another anchor briefly mentioned news of the accusation and Kelly's denial, but no reason for Kelly's absence was given at that time.
The NYPD and the DA's office haven't yet released many details about the investigation. An unnamed law enforcement official, however, told the Times that the woman, who is in her late 20s or early 30s, walked into a precinct station house with her sister Tuesday evening to file her complaint:
The woman told the police that she met the younger Mr. Kelly on the street and that the two went to South Street Seaport for drinks on Oct. 8. They then proceeded to her office at a Lower Manhattan law firm. The woman told the police that the rape occurred at the office. The two continued to have contact by phone and text message after the encounter.
According to the woman’s account, when her boyfriend later learned about the night, he became angry. He then approached the police commissioner at a public event and told him that the younger Mr. Kelly had sexually assaulted his girlfriend. The commissioner, according to the woman’s account, told him to write a letter. It was unclear if the man did so.
NBC New York with Kelly's bio:
