Mitt Romney’s latest high-profile backer: George H.W. Bush.

The elder Bush offered his support during comments to the Houston Chronicle this week. While it doesn’t appear as though the former president is offering a formal endorsement, it’s clear that Romney is his pick for the GOP nomination if for no other reason than the other candidate he likes doesn’t seem to be able to get the job done on the campaign trail.

“I think Romney is the best choice for us,” he told the paper. “I like [Rick] Perry, but he doesn’t seem to be going anywhere; he’s not surging forward.”

He trumpeted Romney’s "stability, experience, [and] principal," adding: "I just think he’s mature and reasonable – not a bomb-thrower." He then later was careful to add that he didn't think there were any "bomb-throwers" in the field of GOP candidates.

As for Newt Gingrich, Bush diplomatically offered: "I’m not his biggest advocate."
