NBC Executive Apologizes to Bachmann for "Bitch" Intro

UPDATE: The network has apologized. Doug Vaughan, NBC’s vice president for late night programming, sent a personal letter to Michele Bachman, in which he said that the song played during her appearance on Jimmy Fallon’s show was “not only unfortunate but also unacceptable,” a spokeswoman for the GOP presidential candidate told the Associated Press. Vaughn also said the band had been “severely reprimanded.”

UPDATE Wednesday, Nov. 23 12:35 p.m.: Michele Bachmann said Wednesday that she accepts Jimmy Fallon's apology for the insulting song that was played during her Monday night appearance on his show, but that NBC's failure to make a similar one is proof of the political bias and sexism of "the Hollywood entertainment elite."

"If that had been Michelle Obama who had come out on the stage and if that song had been played for Michelle Obama I have no doubt that NBC would have apologized to her and likely they could have fired the drummer or at least suspended him," Bachmann said, according CBS News.

"None of that happened from NBC, and this is clearly a form of bias on the part of the Hollywood entertainment elite but it's also I think sexism as well," she continued. "This wouldn't be tolerated if this was Michelle Obama. It shouldn't be tolerated if it's a conservative woman, either."

Wednesday, Nov. 23: Late-night host Jimmy Fallon took to Twitter Tuesday night to apologize to Michele Bachmann for the less-than-friendly intro song she was greeted with when she walked on stage for her Monday appearance on his show.

"I'm honored that @michelebachmann was on our show yesterday and I'm so sorry about the intro mess," he wrote. "I really hope she comes back."

As the GOP hopeful walked on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon stage Monday, the show’s band, The Roots, played an instrumental version of a Fishbone song called "Lyin’ Ass Bitch." (Slate's Weigel has the video here.)

While Bachmann appeared unaware of the song's lyric at the time, it’s is pretty clear the band’s selection was intentional. The band’s drummer, ?uestlove, had tweeted: "Aight late night walkon song devotees: you love it when we snark: this next one takes the cake. ask around cause i aint tweeting title."

CNN reports that after the show, Fallon tweeted: "@Questlove is grounded," and the following day the band issued a statement saying "the performance was a tongue-in-cheek and spur of the moment decision."
