Economist Lucas Papademos was named prime minister of Greece on Thursday, following days of negotiations over who was best suited to lead the country through its current debt crisis.

Papademos will lead an interim Greek unity government that has pledged to quickly sign off on the tough terms of a European aid package that is aimed at saving the country from bankruptcy.

The Associated Press with more: "The 64-year-old former vice president of the European Central Bank will lead a government backed by both the governing Socialists and the opposition conservatives that will operate until early elections, tentatively set for February. He replaces outgoing Prime Minister George Papandreou midway through a four-year term."
