UPDATE: Pete Schweddy was wrong. Some people can resist his balls.
Conservative parent group One Million Moms, which is an affiliate of the American Family Association, is threatening to boycott Ben & Jerry's over what it says is the ice cream maker's "vulgar new flavor."
The group is urging members to contact the company and let it know that if it continues to distribute the new limited-edition "Schweddy Balls" flavor they will no longer buy its products.
“The vulgar new flavor has turned something as innocent as ice cream into something repulsive,” the group writes on its website. “Not exactly what you want a child asking for at the supermarket.”
The group also points out that Ben & Jerry's has rubbed them the wrong way before with its choice of names for the company's flavors, specifically when it released a special edition of "Chubby Hubby" called "Hubby Hubby" last year in celebration of gay marriage. "It seems that offending customers has become an annual tradition for Ben & Jerry's," the group writes.
A rep for the ice cream maker tells ABC News that, so far, One Million Moms hasn't lived up to its name. The company has heard from only about 600 people complaining about the new flavor.
“This is just about silly fun,” company spokesman Sean Greenwood said. “We didn’t name it for shock value. We did it because it’s a funny skit.”
POST Thursday, Sept. 8: What’s better than having your image plastered on the side of containers of your own Ben & Jerry’s ice cream flavor a la Stephen Colbert and Jimmy Fallon?
Easy: Having a flavor named after your balls.
Alec Baldwin can lay claim to that honor now that the ice cream maker has unveiled its newest flavor: “Schweddy Balls,” an homage to a Saturday Night Live character Baldwin played back in the 1990s.
During the skit, bakery owner Pete Schweddy appeared on an NPR program to tout his balls – "popcorn balls, cheese balls, rum balls—you name it."
The Vermont ice cream maker began selling the flavor in its stores Thursday. It’s only a limited edition flavor, though, so SNL fans may want to act quickly to fulfill their “Schweddy Balls” cravings.
The flavor is made up of vanilla ice cream “with a hint of rum and is loaded with fudge covered rum balls and milk chocolate malt balls,” according to the company.
You can relive Baldwin in all his Schweddy glory here. And here’s a screenshot of the carton to prove we're not making this up:
