U.S. officials are ramping up security at home and abroad in the wake of the killing of Osama Bin Laden.

Politico reports that local law enforcement officials in New York City, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., are taking precautionary steps in hopes of averting a potential terrorist attack.

The State Department, meanwhile, warned U.S. embassies early Monday of the heightened possibility for anti-American violence in the aftermath of Bin Laden’s death, according to the Associated Press.

“Given the uncertainty and volatility of the current situation, U.S. citizens in areas where recent events could cause anti-American violence are strongly urged to limit their travel outside of their homes and hotels and avoid mass gatherings and demonstrations,” the department said in a statement released shortly after Obama announced Bin Laden’s death in a televised address to the nation.
