Obama Calls for Changes in Health Bill's Abortion Limits
The president made it clear last night that he's not comfortable with the last-minute language inserted in the health care bill that would prohibit women from using subsidies to buy an insurance plan that covers abortions. Obama said that while no one is trying to "change what is the principle that has been in place for a very long time, which is federal dollars are not used to subsidize abortions," it's also important to make sure that "we're not restricting women's insurance choices." Meanwhile, Sen. Olympia Snowe, one of the few Republicans who could have made the bill bipartisan, warned that she couldn't support it because it would increase costs for middle-class families and small businesses. "We should rewrite the whole bill," Snowe said.
