3. Supreme Court Allows Release of Priest Sex-Abuse Papers
The nation's highest court has declined to block the release of more than 12,000 pages of documents from 23 lawsuits against priests accused of sexual abuse, according to the Associated Press. The case, brought by newspapers seeking to make the papers public, is just one of the thousands of cases the Supreme Court will not review in its new term, which began Monday. By declining to hear a Florida case, the Supreme Court won't overturn the state law that requires students to obtain their parents' written permission if they don't want to recite the pledge of allegiance. By turning down an Illinois case, the court won't force the state to issue "Choose Life" license plates. The court also won't review a "ruling that the Obama administration says will cost taxpayers at least $19 billion in royalties on energy leases in the Gulf of Mexico," according to the AP. (The Washington Post has posted links to additional interesting cases the high court has declined to hear this term.)
