3. Letterman: Watch Me Make Light of Sexual Harassment
David Letterman's studio audience was in for a surprise yesterday, when the popular late-night host started his show out with a deeply personal, bizarre monologue where he admitted to having sex with female employees. Mixing in jokes, Letterman told how three weeks ago, someone had demanded $2 million from him in order not to go public with the information. He said he went to go testify before a grand jury yesterday and admitted to the relationships. "My response to that is yes, I have," he said. "Would it be embarrassing if it were made public? Yes, it would, especially for the women." In what the Associated Press says might have been Letterman's "defense mechanism," the late-night host, who married his longtime girlfriend in March, continued to make jokes. "I know what you're saying," he said. "I'll be darned, Dave had sex." A CBS News employee who works for the show 48 Hours, Robert Halderman, was arrested. The confession will surely help Letterman continue his ratings roll. The NYT reports that last week he beat the Tonight Show by the biggest margin since 1994.
