1. Extraordinary Rendition To Continue Under Obama
Administration officials have stated that they do not plan to suspend the policy of extraordinary rendition but that they will instead introduce stricter measures to prevent torture and will no longer send prisoners to countries with histories of abuse. The news came as a disappointment to human rights groups, which have argued that the policy fails to protect prisoners against inhumane treatment. The move is part of a larger effort to re-evaluate rendition and interrogation policies, and was prompted by the forthcoming release of a 2004 CIA Inspector General’s report on these policies. Soon after this news was released, Attorney General Eric Holder stated that he plans to appoint a prosecutor to investigate allegations of misconduct among CIA interrogators.
